Cultural Monuments of the City Municipality Slovenj Gradec

The roots of the Slovenj Gradec region reach deep into history. The development of the wider area and the urban settlement was facilitated by good transit routes, agricultural and non-agricultural activities, as well as numerous crafts and trades. The exceptionally rich history of Slovenj Gradec is also manifested in its many cultural monuments.

Following an initiative by the City Municipality of Slovenj Gradec, the Carithian Regional Museum launched the project of marking the immovable cultural monuments in the City Municipality of Slovenj Gradec.

The City Municipality of Slovenj Gradec has 136 monuments of local significance. The project of marking immovable cultural monuments in the City Municipality of Slovenj Gradec involves a gradual marking of all immovable cultural monuments in accordance with the Rules on Marking Cultural Monuments from 2011 and the accompanying Manual, issued pursuant to Article 58 of the Cultural Heritage Protection Act (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, Nos. 16/08 and 123/08).

In 2017, the monuments of local significance were marked in the city centre (City Houses, St. Elizabeth’s Church, The Rothenturn Mansion, the City Centre and the Park of Heroes). The next phases of the project will include the marking of archaeological sites, sacral buildings, ethnological monuments, sacral and secular monuments, commemorative buildings and chapels. By marking these monuments we wish to bring the history and the relics of the past of Slovenj Gradec closer to the local community and visitors and, at the same time, increase their visibility.

There are also three monuments of national significance located in Slovenj Gradec: he Church of the Holy Spirit, the Vodriž castle ruins and the Trška Gora Hospital.
