Hans Winkler, slovenjgraški notar in ljubiteljski arheolog.

Stari trg pri Slovenj Gradcu – the Grajski hrib archaeological site

(HRN 7945)

Grajski hrib (“Castle Hill”) above Stari trg was already settled in the late Bronze Age (from the mid-14th to the mid-12th century BC) and in the Iron Age. Archaeological remains at this site were discovered in 1907 and 1910 by Dr Hans Winkler, a notary and amateur archaeologist from Slovenj Gradec. At the slope of the hill looking towards Stari trg, foundations of prehistoric objects were found; his notes also mention the remains of a medieval mint. But since his eld documentation and documentation of nds (cup handles, pot handles, decorated pot shards) are very patchy, further archaeological research is needed for a more accurate description of the site. The site, together with the Colatio site, is part of the Stari trg archaeological complex, which is of Europe-wide signi cance.
